Tuning a line array is 20% measurement, 80% listening

A prediction plot gets you into the room. Your ears get you to a mix the artist actually recognizes. Notes from our system techs on where the two meet.

Modern prediction software is remarkable. You can model a room, aim every box, and walk in on show day with coverage that's already 90% of the way there. But the last 10% — the part the audience actually feels — still comes down to a person, a measurement mic, and a familiar track played loud.

Start with the model, trust the measurement

We build the design in software, hang to the plot, and then verify with dual-channel measurement. The transfer function tells us what the room is doing to the system. Where prediction and measurement disagree, the room wins.

Then put the software down

Once the response is flat and coherent, we stop looking at the screen. A reference track everyone on the crew knows by heart reveals things no graph will:

  • Whether vocals sit where they should
  • If the low end is powerful or just loud
  • Whether the mix travels to the back row intact

The goal isn't flat, it's right

Flat is a starting point, not a destination. The best-tuned system is the one where the artist walks out at soundcheck and hears their record — only bigger. It's the standard we bring to every audio engineering call we take, on the line arrays and PA systems and consoles our engineers mix on.
